Note for:   William BLISS,   10 JUN 1638 - 1674          Index
William Bliss, a wine merchant in Southwark, London. In his will, amongst many other bequests, he left £400 to the village of Nether Heyford to provide for a Free School for a) all children living in Upper and Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire, and b) any child with the surname Bliss living within 5 miles. £100 was to be used to purchase a building and £300 was to be invested to allow for the school's upkeep.

The School opened in 1683. A "new" School was opened in January 1880.

The money that was invested and still helps pay for all exterior maintenance, hence the name The Bliss Charity School. The state pays for everything inside the school.

I am in the process of writing a short history of the School for our Village History Series; when completed I will post details.

The Bliss Family History Society meets here and all their Family History research is kept here.

Note for:   George GARDNER,   1773 - 9 AUG 1807          Index
Assumed to be son of Richard and Barbara but no confirmation.

Supporting eveidence......

1) Had a daughter named Barbara

2) Richard and Barbara only had 6 children - would have expected more - so possibly some baptised elsewhere

3) Parish for Richard and Barbara wedding not found - probably not Northants - but one or more children could have been baptised there especially as George would have been the first

4) Witness at George and Mary wedding was John GARDNER - possibly brother who was alive at the time

Notes

Note for:   Sophia GARDNER,   1845 -          Index
Baptised at Bugbrooke, 5 Jan 1851

Had a base born daughter Caroline who was baptised Caroline Ellen Wright GARDNER - she was probably born PRIOR to Sophia marrying Samuel WRIGHT. Caroline's father is therefore uncertain. However, in 1881 census, she appears with the name Caroline E WRIGHT.
